What Islam says about Amulets and Tawiz
What is Amulet?
Amulet (also known as Tawiz) is a locket or chain sort of accessory considered as a good luck charm and a protector from nazar or black magic. There are some Muslims also among people of other religion who wear these amulets to protect them from evil powers.
Is this Right way to Wear Amulets for Protection?
It is absolutely wrong to trust on these kinds of protection ways like amulets of Tawiz because no non-living substance can save us from any evil powers. However, only the Creator has all the powers to control evils. Thus, as Quran also says in Surah Al-Falak:
“Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak (1) From the evil of that which He created (2) And from the evil of darkness when it settles (3) And from the evil of the blowers in knots (4) And from the evil of an envier when he envies (5)" [113: 1-5].
The above verse clearly states that the only protector from the evil is the One who is the Creator of evil also. We should seek refuge and we should ask protection from only One God who is Allah (Creator of all good and bad).
What Hadith says regarding Amulets?
According to the Hadith of Abu Dawood, the Prophet of Allah (P.B.U.H) disliked ten things which are as follow:
“Yellow colouring, meaning khalooq (a perfume made from saffron), dyeing grey hair, trailing the lower garment, wearing a gold ring, throwing dice, a woman adorning herself before people who are not her mahrams, using spells (ruqyah) except with the Mu'awwidhatan, wearing amulets, coitus interruptus, and having intercourse with a woman who is breastfeeding a child; but he did not declare them to be prohibited” [Narrated by al-Nasaa’i, 50880; Abu Dawood, 4222].
The above ten things are discouraged by Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) because of reasons behind them and Prophet (P.B.U.H) has also disliked things which can cause disadvantage to mankind. For example, as mentioned in the above hadith that Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) dislikes the intercourse with the woman who is breastfeeding already a child, for the reason that if such a woman is intercoursed by her man and if she becomes pregnant then this condition could harm the child who is on mother feed.
Indeed! In every teaching of Islam, there are great benefits for humans.
What About Amulets on which Quranic verses are written?
The most important rational considering the Quranic verses are missing by many people today. And the rational or the purpose of sending Quranic verses is to take guidance and messages which has been sent by the Lord of the universe. These Quranic verses are sent by Allah to guide people the correct way of living. These verses are not sent to write them on different things and hang those things on hands or neck or any other body part. Because writing these verses on somewhere cannot save us from evils but believing on these verses and understanding these verses then practicing our lives according to these verses can indeed save us from evil powers.
We should study and educate ourselves from the lifestyles of Prophets and Sahabahs that how they have spent their lives. Their lifestyle is important to note because they are people who have been chosen by Allah as teachers and they are people who have been asked by Allah to teach the mankind what is good and what is bad.
Hence, we cannot find any such lifestyle of those people who are called as Prophets and messengers. We cannot find any such thing in history that any of the Prophets has worn such amulet or thread or anything for the protection from evils.
What Quran says about Reasoning and Seeking Refuge from Allah?
Allah has said multiple times in Quran that people should use their brains for knowing the good and bad. Allah has given many signs in His creation and He has let people think that on what path they should go and what they should follow. As Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 164:
“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, and the [great] ships which sail through the sea with that which benefits people, and what Allah has sent down from the heavens of rain, giving life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and dispersing therein every [kind of] moving creature, and [His] directing of the winds and the clouds controlled between the heaven and earth are signs for a people who use reason” [2: 164].
In the above verse Allah has reminded people about the greatness of the Creator (Allah) and then He said at the end of the verse that there are signs for people who use their brains. Using brain means to think on good and bad, and the logic and reasoning says clearly that no non-living thing can save us from anything and only enitity who has all the powers is able to save and protect us.
As Allah says in Surah Al-Anbiya:
“Say: ‘Who can guard and protect you in the night or in the day from the (punishment of the) Most Gracious (Allaah)?’ Nay, but they turn away from the remembrance of their Lord” [21: 42].
